How Much Land Does a Man Need? by Leo Tolstoy
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
‘How Much Land Does a Man Need?’ is an effective lesson in gratitude and contentment.
I found it noteworthy to contemplate how the whole story started off with comparison between a man and his contemporaries, which in turn was the mechanism for the Devil to manipulate his feelings and reorient his goals.
I believe there is much wisdom in this, since it is the lack of contentment and absence of gratitude in one’s life which is the precursor to envy and dissatisfaction.
Nothing ground-breaking, but a nice short story which effectively demonstrates greed and how man’s insatiable appetite can only truly be filled via his demise.
A fitting admonishment in our modern age of covetousness and envy.
